the has-been

With a Republican Party that loses elections as gracefully as Willkie and loses wars as pre-emptively as Chamberlain, America will forget the Bush presidency ever happened. ... 1:54 P.M. (link)

Animal Farm: As if the GOP needed any more bad omens, this week the Philadelphia Zoo became the latest to join a national trend—giving up on elephants. Now the press can start looking for the next sign of the Republican apocalypse: gun owners turning in their pickup trucks and riding donkeys to work.

Perhaps because zoos represent the world the way man would have made it, they have long been a leading political indicator. In retrospect, China's seemingly innocent gift of pandas to the United States three decades ago should have been an obvious warning of its desire for global economic hegemony.

Cincinnati Reds Ready To Move Spring Training Cite To Arizona

Based on these choices, they should move to Arizona. It's a no-brainer.

I've heard from lots of fans complaining about the longer distances to Arizona and how they visit family in Florida each spring. What I haven't heard is an explanation for why there are rarely capacity or near-capacity crowds at Ed Smith Stadium to see the Reds. The place holds over 8,000, and the attendance usually is closer to 4,000. The only sellouts I've noticed the past two springs are when the Red Sox or Yankees visit. While those teams draw hundreds for their workouts at their own complexes, the Reds might draw dozens to theirs.

Goodyear will decide Monday whether to enter a 90-day exclusive negotiating period with the Reds, so obviously it's getting serious. If negotiations lead to a deal, Cincinnati would become the 15th team in the Cactus League.

No excitement please, we're Reading

An FA Cup run would have been a bit risky, so striker Dave Kitson informed us all that they did not give two 'hoots' about that.

They want to concentrate on the league, but of course they don't want to do too well in that because that would put them in Europe. And they wouldn't want that.

The most incredulous thing of all is that Royals fans, blinded by their love of Coppell, call radio phone-ins defending the club's position.

"Our Steve's right, we're not ready for European football," they garble.

So instead they'll stumble on aimlessly until their luck runs out and they go back down to the Championship.

They could have made the most of their elevated status and had some fantastic memories that would have lasted a lifetime - as a Bolton fan who has seen his side venture into Europe twice in the past three seasons, I can assure them of that.
